Policy experts are calling for a new Artificial Intelligence Commissioner to combat Australia’s “over reliance” on foreign tech firms responsible for almost all the innovation and production behind tools like Chat GPT.

Under a new proposal to develop locally managed, public AI capability, the Commissioner would oversee local development and levy charges on foreign tech firms to contribute to it.

It would combat the undue influence on Australia’s AI debate of tech giants like Google, Microsoft and Meta that are applying “tax minimisation and tax avoidance strategies” while standing to reaps more profits from AI.
