Banks leave Canberra behind on digital ID

Two of Australia’s biggest banks are forging ahead with a digital identity service in the absence of legislation for an economy-wide expansion of the federal government’s national digital identity scheme.

The Commonwealth Bank of Australia and National Australia Bank on Tuesday announced they have switched on ConnectID, a digital identity solution offered by Australian Payments Plus (formerly eftpos), after piloting the service late last year.

ConnectID sits between identity providers and other relying services. It was the first non-government exchange to be accredited under the government’s Trusted Digital Identity Framework two years ago.
