Big tech’s platform fact checking ‘stalling’ in Australia

Australia’s communication regulator has called out “stalling” fact checking by platform giants after Meta and Google abandoned efforts to verify information with experts, and other companies stopped detailing their steps in Australia.

The concern is raised in the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) annual report on digital platforms’ efforts to combat disinformation and misinformation, which is based on the companies’ transparency reports.

Published on Friday, the ACMA report shows that last year there was around 3 million fewer pieces of content (including reshares) on Facebook and Instagram with a warning label by fact-checking partners in Australia.
