Business urges govt to ditch phased digital ID rollout

Businesses have urged the federal government to open its digital identity system to the private sector at the same time as state governments, arguing that not doing so will distort the market, stymie citizen choice and delay privacy gains.

The Business Council of Australia, as well as the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, National Australia Bank and Woolworths, are among those pushing for changes to the proposed expansion of the Australian Government Digital ID System (AGDIS).

The Digital ID Bill, introduced to Parliament in November, will extend the AGDIS across the economy, starting with state and territory governments (Phase 2) and the use of government digital IDs to access private sector services (Phase 3), if it is passed.
