Calls for new ‘national interest’ test for datasets

New ministerial powers preventing certain datasets from being stored outside of Australia should be handed to the federal government, according to a local cloud services provider and data centre operator.

Macquarie Technology Group has also urged the federal government to develop a data classification scheme for government data that can also be used by the states and territories, as well as critical infrastructure providers.

In its submission to the Australian Cyber Security Strategy discussion paper, published earlier this month, Macquarie said the new statutory power would help ensure government data was treated like that of critical infrastructure providers.
