Calls to back sustainable aviation fuel like hydrogen

Australia’s Jet Zero Council is putting pressure on the federal government to include sustainable aviation fuel subsidies in this year’s Budget on a similar scale to the $2 billion Hydrogen Headstart program.

Aviation accounts for around two to three per cent of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions. With electric and hydrogen-based solutions not currently deemed feasible alternatives for long-haul flights, the aviation sector has backed sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as a pathway to net-zero.

But SAF industry support is needed to close the ‘green premium’ price gap between conventional fossil fuel-based jet fuels and those produced from biomass according to Sustainable Aviation Fuel Alliance of Australia and New Zealand (SAFANZ) chief executive Shahana McKenzie, who leads the Council’s SAF industry policy development.
