Policing hacking powers have helped thwart botnet attacks involving thousands of hijacked devices, preventing future crimes at scale, according to the Australian Federal Police.
The example was offered up by the AFP as evidence of the “true value” of data disruption warrants during the second day of hearings for the review of ‘Identify and Disrupt’ laws on Thursday.
Data disruption warrants, which allow authorities to access the online accounts of criminals and modify, add or delete the data within those accounts, is one of three available under the powers introduced with bipartisan support in 2021.
