Data centre emissions surge as demand for services grow

Australia’s largest data centre providers added more than 100,000 tonnes in emissions to the atmosphere last year, with new data showing the CO2 impact of the fast-growing market.

Annual emissions data released by the Clean Energy Regulator on Friday show emissions reached 1.78 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) in 2023-24, surging 114,763 tonnes over the 12 months.

Total emissions from the country’s largest data centre providers is up almost 7 per cent on average, but growth on the whole is slowing from the double-digit climbs between 2018-19 and 2021-22.
