Defence takes first step in restarting satellite tender process

Defence has restarted its search for a new military-grade geostationary satellite after scrapping a multi-billion-dollar contract with US defence and aerospace giant Lockheed Martin late last year.

In a request for information on Friday, the department revealed a new program, dubbed SPA9102, aimed at procuring a single satellite to operate in a narrowband frequency range for up to 15 years.

It represents a narrowing of the former JP9102 program, which would have delivered up to five geostationary satellites, as well as multiple ground stations, for wideband, narrowband and protected communication.
