Defence urged to create sovereign industry panel

A panel of Australian-only defence industry suppliers should be created by the Department of Defence to support advanced capability and build supply chain resilience, two local firms have argued in submissions to a Senate inquiry.

With panels increasing used to source federal government contracts, the Sovereign Defence Industry Capability Panel (SDICP) has been proposed to support the sector where it makes “strategic sense”, in line with the Defence Strategic Review.

It would also work to complement the Advanced Strategy Capabilities Accelerator (ASCA) set up last month to support defence innovation with $3.4 billion in funding, largely reprofiled from existing defence innovation programs.
