Ed Husic and Daniel Mookhey join line-up for Mazzucato

Federal Industry minister Ed Husic and NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey will join renowned economist and author Professor Mariana Mazzucato for the first leg of her speaking tour in Sydney next month.

Professor Mazzucato will keynote a business luncheon at the Hyatt Regency in Sydney on March 12, with Mr Husic providing a ministerial welcome and the state’s Treasurer Mr Mookhey providing a ministerial address.

InnovationAus.com can also announce that Mr Husic will join the professor for a panel discussion on issues ranging from research to manufacturing, and from government procurement to capability development.

University of Technology Sydney vice-chancellor and president Professor, Andrew Parfitt, and Emily Scivetti, the chief operating officer at Australian offshore wind pioneer Oceanex Energy, will also grace the stage for the panel.

The session will be moderated by television and radio broadcast legend Geraldine Doogue, while the national science agency CSIRO’s chief executive officer Doug Hilton will provide the event wrap-up.

As an economist, Professor Mazzucato has been a leading global authority on industrial policy, and in particular the role of the state in building both industrial capability and capacity. She is a best-selling author of books on innovation systems, including The Entrepreneurial State and Mission Economy.

Most recently she co-authored The Big Con with Rosie Collington, a book detailing an over-reliance by governments and businesses in many advanced economies on the global consulting houses.

Professor Mazzucato will also address a sold-out public lecture at the University of Technology Sydney on the evening of March 11. She will be joined on stage by Senator Tim Ayres, the Assistant Minister for Manufacturing and Assistant Minister for Trade, who will deliver a ministerial address. Professor Parfitt and newly-appointed CSIRO director Roy Green, a leader on innovation systems in this country, will also join the panel discussion at the Sydney public lecture.

The Sydney luncheon address by Professor Mazzucato – with the participation of the federal Industry minister Ed Husic and NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey is a cornerstone event for the Australian business and research sectors.
