Export control reforms threaten our fabless chipmakers

Proposed reforms to defence export controls pose a threat to Australia’s competitiveness in the global semiconductor industry and could ultimately push fabless chipmakers with local operations to move offshore.

That’s according to the Semiconductor Sector Service Bureau (S3B), which also believes the legislation is already having a chilling effect on the industry, with organisations choosing to delay recruitment and bids for new projects due to uncertainty.

The organisation, funded by the NSW government and supported by three of Sydney’s biggest universities, is urging the federal government to “clarify exemptions to the R&D community”, particularly where industry works closely with academia and in aspects of training and education.
