Facial recognition, digital ID laws could arrive in parallel

Controversial facial recognition laws previously rejected by Parliament’s intelligence and security committee could be reintroduced in “parallel” with the Albanese government’s new digital identity legislation.

As the timeline for the expansion of the Australian Government Digital Identity System (AGDIS) across the broader economy becomes clear, new documents have shed light on long-lost legislation for a national facial recognition scheme.

The scheme is necessary to realise the government’s vision of biometrically anchored digital identity credentials, as agreed to by federal, state and territory ministers in the National Strategy for Identity Resilience last month.
