Far Horizons: Uni sector renews push to join EU innovation program

The university sector has stepped up its call for Australia to sign on to the world’s largest research fund, Horizon Europe — a move that would need the Albanese government to commit tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars.

Despite reluctance from both Coalition and Labor governments to date, peak groups for universities and scientists have renewed their Horizon push as part of Australia’s response to slumping productivity and shifting geopolitics.

Australia could follow Canada and New Zealand in signing on to the $163 billion funding program for research and innovation, or start negotiations to Europe’s successor program from 2028, which could double the funding on offer to a new generation of scholars and innovators.
