Govt becomes broker for defence industry

The Australian government is set to broker the sale of sovereign defence capabilities to other nations on behalf of local firms under a new program designed to boost export opportunities and deliver “supply chain surety”.

Akin to a US arrangement responsible for the majority of federal government contracts with US defence firms last year, the program allows Australia to deal directly with like-minded governments on sales, streamlining procurement processes.

It arrives as the federal government signs off on Australia’s “single biggest defence export” of all time, which will deliver more than 100 Australian-made armoured vehicles to the German Army.
