Govt mulls additional support for sovereign AI

Industry and Science minister Ed Husic says the federal government remains open to providing additional support for the development of sovereign AI capabilities, but that overseas examples suggest much of this work will be driven “largely off the back of private capital”.

Mr Husic said the development of large language models in Australia was important, noting that the government had already “set aside a considerable amount of money in the National Reconstruction Fund to help with the development of [AI], and also the Industry Growth Program”.

While remaining “very open to people’s input and advice” on the provision of additional government support, he said that “in a lot of cases this work has happened, as we’ve seen overseas, largely off the back of private capital and I imagine this will potentially be the same”.
