Govt sets phased path to digital ID in draft bill

The Albanese government has kicked off public consultations on a proposed expansion of its digital identity system, with draft legislation revealing plans for a phased roll-out to the private sector.

The revised legislation, which comes more than more than two years after an initial exposure draft was released, now involves extending the scheme to state and territory governments, before later involving the private sector.

Finance minister Katy Gallagher opened a three-week consultation on the draft bill on Tuesday, ending an 18-month wait for legislation from the Albanese government to build out the idling digital ID system.
