Inquiry calls for new ‘sophisticated investor’ tests


Sophisticated investor rules should be overhauled to take into account knowledge and experience tests, a parliamentary committee has recommended in a bid to boost local capital investment.

The call to create new pathways for investors to qualify as wholesale investors comes months after the Albanese government walked back a controversial proposal to make it harder for retail investors to qualify.

Amid a fierce backlash from dozens of angel investors, venture capital firms and industry groups last year, the government quietly shelved the plan to raise the income and asset test until at least after the election.
