McKinsey tries to shoot down China links

The Australian boss of McKinsey has distanced local operations from the firm’s work in China, after a push from US lawmakers to ban the controversial consulting giant from government work.

Top Republican lawmakers last month called for McKinsey to be banned from securing federal contracts in the US after revelations a thinktank “led” by the firm gave policy recommendations to the Chinese government.

A book by the Urban China Initiative (UCI) thinktank reportedly contributed to Beijing’s five-year plan in 2015, according to the Financial Times. The plan deepened co-operation between Chinese business and the military and pushed foreign companies out of sensitive industries, feeding tensions with the US.
