‘Mines to medicine’: Push for new SA nuclear industry

Cutting edge cancer diagnosis and treatments could be produced, trialled and exported from South Australia using the waste from locally mined uranium, according to a new report claiming the state has a unique opportunity to become a global leader in radiopharmaceuticals.

The report, by life sciences accelerator MTPConnect, calls for a push into the new industry that would suits the state’s large uranium deposits, proposing high risk processing at remote mines to produce radioisotopes for medical use.

The move would start with planning throughout the year and a new state radiopharmaceutical innovation fund to launch in 2025, with a full state value-chain to eventually capture a share of a projected $21 billion market.
