Minister puts ARC on notice after ChatGPT used in grant assessments

Education minister Jason Clare has told the Australian Research Council to reform oversight of its grant assessments process following reports that ChatGPT was used to produce assessment reports.

Last Friday, the ARC Tracker Twitter account tweeted that they had seen “several assessor reports” allegedly produced by ChatGPT that read like a “generic regurgitation” of the grant applications, with “no real expert assessment”.

One report included text reading “regenerate response”, which is labelled at the bottom of the ChatGPT window. “It’s smoking gun evidence that ChatGPT was used to generate the assessment text,” ARC_Tracker said.
