Treasurer Jim Chalmers says the federal government is focused on the “huge gains on offer” from artificial intelligence and “not just the guardrails”, in a sign that its priorities are shifting.
In a speech to business leaders on Wednesday night, Mr Chalmers talked up the government’s dual focus on the technology, which he says is as much about economic growth as it is about getting the safety settings right.
His comments come amid escalating calls for the government to use the upcoming federal Budget to prevent Australia from becoming a global AI laggard by providing urgent corrective funding.
