A sovereign capability moonshot: Tackling the ‘missing middle’

Science and Technology Australia has called on government to establish a $2.5 billion Sovereign Capability Moonshot Program that would support research, translation and industrial transformation in areas identified as national priorities.

In its pre-Budget submission to government, STA also called for a $426 million investment in a network of prototyping and scaling facilities to support researchers and early-stage deep tech startups.

The submission broadly calls for a more investment focus on TRL 4 to 6 on the Technology Readiness Scale as a way to address Australia’s “missing middle” problem, defined as the gap between early-stage research and the commercialisation of research.
