OAIC pitches tool to slash data breach notifications

Almost one-fifth of notifications through Australia’s data breaches notification regime could be averted if a self-assessment tool being pitched by the privacy watchdog is taken up by the federal government.

With the number of notifications under the Notifiable Data Breaches (NDB) scheme growing year on year, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner has proposed the tool to reduce compliance costs for businesses.

Both New Zealand and Canada have already introduced self-assessment tools to help businesses and government agencies understand if a breach is significant and needs to be reported.
