Privacy commissioner hits back at PC’s privacy retreat

Australia’s privacy commissioner says walking back long-overdue privacy reforms and loosening existing laws after a years-long push to strengthen them would be like “throwing out the baby with the bathwater”.

Commissioner Carly Kind made the comments in response to a Productivity Commission proposal for an alternative compliance pathway allowing businesses to focus on outcomes, rather than controls-based rules.

The Commission also recommended the government dump a planned right to erasure in its next tranche of privacy reforms, which are currently being prepared for cabinet approval.
