A former chief scientist will argue in Parliament against rushing an AUKUS fuelled plan that restricts Australian researchers from working with non-US or UK counterparts, warning more scientific collaboration is needed, not less.
Professor Ian Chubb, who secured a carve out for most scientists from the current defence export regime as Australia’s chief scientist in 2015, will on Friday push for an exemption in the new regime to be protected in legislation.
The new regime will remove the need for permits to trade in military or dual-use goods and services on the Defence and Strategic Goods List (DGSL) within Australia and with the US and UK.
