A government-led committee has cleared legislation that would enable Australia’s economy-wide digital identity system, but a speedy passage looks less certain after the Coalition and Greens indicated they will pursue several amendments.

The Opposition has picked up corporate Australia’s complaint that the system’s staged roll out starting with governments will disadvantage the private sector, labelling it a “Big Government approach”.

The Greens have indicated a willingness to support the bill if it can secure more privacy and security improvements, including removing or restricting law enforcement access to the data.
