Tighter online safety ‘expectations’ to protect kids

Digital platforms now face additional online safety standards when deploying generative AI and recommender algorithms through updates to the regulator’s Basic Online Safety Expectations.

A key new requirement is that social media, online messaging services, and other internet services now consider “the best interests of the child” when designing and operating services likely to be accessed by children, bringing Australia into line with jurisdictions like the UK.

The new expectations were formalised by Communications minister Michelle Rowland on Thursday through an amended determination and are largely unchanged from the draft issued in November 2023.
