Trump threatens tariffs on nations targeting big tech

US President Donald Trump has given the clearest signal yet that his government will levy tariffs on nations that unfairly discriminate against US companies or inhibit their growth through taxes or regulation.

The US President on Friday issued a memo saying he will be “defending” US companies and innovators from a wave of digital services taxes and “extraterritorial authority” by imposing tariffs that “repair any resulting imbalance”.

The memo calls out Australia among other countries as beneficiaries of US tech imperialism and attacks efforts like digital service taxes and regulations, fines and charges, cross border data limits, network fees and local content requirements.
