NSW Health told to open up digital patient records

A landmark commission into NSW health funding has called for a radical expansion of the state’s $1 billion digital patient record system so GPs and not for profit hospitals can also access the data.

While the state system won’t be fully rolled out until 2030, immediate changes were recommended on Friday to ensure it does not exacerbate the fragmented data problem it is trying to solve and can support a shift to allied and preventive care.

The expansion of NSW system would require significantly more state funding and changes in scope to an in-flight project that never intended to include the other parts of the NSW health system.
