Systems used to automate welfare, migration and other federal governments decisions could be subject to a spate of new obligations under changes being considered in the wake of the Robodebt scandal.
As state governments begin issuing automation guidance for public servants, the federal Attorney-General’s Department has quietly released a consultation paper to seek public views on proposed safeguards for automated-decision making systems (ADM).
Among the safeguards under consideration is a requirement for agencies to conduct regular audits of automated systems and for officials charged with overseeing systems to take “reasonable steps” to ensure decisions align with legislation.
