Automated systems still grounded at Services Australia

Services Australia still doesn’t have the legislative authority to re-commence the use of automated systems to support the processing of welfare claims 20 months since they were paused, according to Government Services minister Bill Shorten.

All of the recommendations of the Royal Commission into the Robodebt Scheme directed at Services Australia had been fully implemented, Mr Shorten said on Monday, aside from a review of data-matching arrangements with the Australian Taxation Office.

But Services Australia is still waiting on a consistent legal framework for the automation of government services before it reintroduces its automated systems. A legal framework for automated systems is being developed by the Attorney-General’s Department in response to the Royal Commission.
