US tech giants’ removal of misinformation in Australia plummeted last year, new transparency data shows, with platforms like Facebook and YouTube taking down tens of thousands less posts and videos.
Meta “took action” on just 350 pieces of content for misinformation violations compared to almost 10,000 in 2023, and also recorded around 3 million fewer content warnings from third-party fact checkers.
Google’s YouTube took down only 5,000 videos uploaded from Australia last year that violated its misinformation policies, compared to more than 20,000 a year earlier.
