Chalmers’ industry agenda faces stakeholder split

Industry and union groups will clash in Canberra on Thursday over the government’s attempt to kickstart green hydrogen and minerals processing industries, in a showdown threatening Treasurer Jim Chalmers’ renewable superpower agenda.

Dr Chalmers needs to pass legislation before the election to establish generous production tax incentives worth almost $14 billion for the strategic industries, or risk a Dutton government with no interest in the plan.

Without the incentives legislated, there will be less upside for investors in the fledgling industries and, the Treasurer warns, Australia could miss out on its place in the net zero transformation.
