Digital platforms join misinformation plan pile on

Online platforms are railing against the Albanese government’s plan to combat misinformation and disinformation, warning draft legislation is poorly defined, hands the regulator too much power and could chill free speech and criticism of government.

Through industry group DIGI, the platforms have warned that the planned regime would make it difficult for them to host content that contests prevailing views.

A DIGI submission to the consultation says “complex social issues” like criticism of Australia’s involvement in the War in Iraq or the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic could have been considered misinformation under the government’s proposal.
