‘Lots of sticky tape’: Review exposes creeping tech risk at Services Aus

Services Australia is pushing its legacy technology to brink, putting the agency at growing risk of “systems failure” while the cost of maintaining decades-old systems grows, according to an independent review.

The report found that while legacy systems “have done the job for many years”, they are “increasingly impeding the agency… from moving forward”, and a cause of deep frustration to staff.

It comes despite a decade-long core technology uplift through the Welfare Payment Infrastructure Transformation (WPIT) that spent more than $1 billion upgrading Centrelink payment systems, as well as equally extensive Medicare payments upgrade.
