‘No little America’: Local launchers reject space treaty fears

Two of Australia’s best known spaceport operators have disputed claims that a new space treaty with the United States will lead to a “little America”, arguing the new deal opens the door to a viable domestic space industry.

The agreement, signed by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and US President Joe Biden in October but only tabled in Parliament last month, has faced strident criticism from local rocket maker Gilmour Space Technologies.

Gilmour Space chief executive Adam Gilmour has argued that the agreement cedes sovereign control of Australia’s access to space from our own territory to the US and will ultimately hamstring Australian rocket companies.
