Eco-warriors Sea Forest Limited have taken out this year’s People’s Choice category at the InnovationAus 2021 Awards for Excellence.

These Aussie innovators were selected via public vote for their seaweed-based food additive that vastly reduces the greenhouse gas emissions associated with livestock.

The People’s Choice award was sponsored by Australian digital services company Squiz and showed a really interesting diversity in the public vote.

Highly commended in this category were telehealth platform Coviu and cybersecurity management company Averto.

Sea Forest Limited has developed an extract, taken from the Asparagopsis seaweed that, when mixed in tiny quantities in livestock feed, can reduce the amount of methane the animals produce by up to 98 per cent.

Animal agriculture contributes about 14.5 per cent of all greenhouse gas emissions around the world each year, the vast majority of which comes from the methane-laden burps of livestock.

““I think that the work we’re doing is really important,” said Sam Elsom, chief executive of Sea Forest Limited.

“Not only for Australia, but for the planet. We recognise that we have this huge global challenge that requires the efforts of many, not for our lifetime but for the future of our children and our children’s children,” he said.

“That’s why I’m really excited to see the recognition of the work that Sea Forest is doing in contributing in a small way to a better future.”
