‘Dangerously undercooked’ export controls sail through committee

Controversial changes to Australia’s Defence trade controls have torn through the committee process, receiving a green light more than a month ahead of schedule so a bill can be debated this week.

Recommended changes are minor, but potentially vital for local researchers and suppliers, because they would protect research exemptions in legislation and bring local SMEs into the co-design of regulations.

But more fundamental criticisms about the regime shutting Australia off from global research efforts, additional regulatory burden, and chilling high tech industries like semiconductors have mostly not been addressed by the committee.
