As the European Union moves to legislate the world’s first Artificial Intelligence Act, Industry and Science minister Ed Husic has stressed the need for Australia’s regulatory regime to be “fit for Australian purpose”.

Mr Husic spoke to InnovationAus.com on Friday following a meeting with OpenAI founder and chief executive Sam Altman, who is in Australia for talks with industry leaders days after reportedly calling for China to take a greater role in global AI regulation.

The federal government is currently consulting on options to tighten the frameworks that are governing AI in Australia. One of the options canvassed is a possible ban on the technology in “high-risk” settings, which the European Parliament also intends to adopt as part of its legislation.
