‘Nuclear fantasy’ threatens data centre future, PM warns

An Australian energy system relying on the Coalition’s nuclear power plan would shrink the opportunity for emerging technology like AI and the data centres that power it, the Prime Minister warned on Friday while launching his yearly agenda.

During a National Press Club address in Canberra, Anthony Albanese said the Opposition’s energy plan left little room for economic growth and put a ceiling on tech infrastructure.

Opposition leader Peter Dutton has previously pointed to tech companies like Meta and AWS plans to use of nuclear to power data centres in the US as justification for his energy plan, but experts have questioned how much room the underlying modelling allows.
