Bureaucrats have begun a painstaking process of reviewing individual business rules in their 40-year-old Centrelink IT system, after an audit revealed $5 billion in incorrect age pension payments.

The backend checks come after the audit blamed the tech for some of the overpayments and exposed just how unwieldy it has become in Canberra, with many of its risks not being managed.
